Brazilian Gaúcho Championship

The Campeonato Gaúcho Série A1 is the top Brazilian league in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, and has been a staple of Brazilian football since its inception in 1919. It is largely known for the rivalry between its two biggest clubs, Grêmio and Internacional, but its competitiveness throughout the division ensures that it offers fantastic value for online betting, with great odds found all the way down the league.

How Does The Campeonato Gaúcho Work?

12 teams compete in each season of the Campeonato Gaúcho, and each side plays each other once in a traditional round-robin format. The bottom two sides at the end of these eleven games are relegated to the Campeonato Gaúcho série B, the second tier of the pyramid.

The top eight sides advance to the knockout rounds, in which the team that finished in first place faces the eighth ranked side, and the runners-up play the seventh placed side, and so on. The knockout rounds are played over two leagues, one game at each side’s home ground, and the team that wins on aggregate progresses to the next round.

In the 2019 edition of the competition, three of the four quarter finals finished 2-1 on aggregate, demonstrating the competitiveness and intensity of the league, which offers fantastic opportunities for online betting.

Best Game To Watch Is Grêmio vs Internacional

The biggest game in the competition, and one of the biggest derbies in the world, Grêmio vs Internacional is never a dull affair. Even a seemingly uneventful 0-0 draw in March 2020 featured a whopping 8 red cards, after a mass brawl broke out in the second half.

The rivalry dates back to the class divides surrounding the foundation of each club, and has regularly descended into violence both on and off the pitch. It is one of the major draws for Campeonato Gaúcho betting however, with the side’s evenness meaning that odds on the fixture tend to be fantastic if a winner can be picked.

Historically too, the sides are well-matched. Grêmio are the reigning champions of the Campeonato Gaúcho and have won the competition on 38 occasions, whilst also winning the Brazilian Série A twice, most recently in 1996.

Internacional, however, have won the Gauchão a record 45 times, as well as the Brazilian Série A thrice. Whilst Grêmio have had the best of recent years, Internacional remain the more decorated side, a fact that only adds to the intensity of the rivalry.

Of the previous 63 fixtures between the two sides, Internacional have won 19, whilst Grêmio have won 20, and the two sides have drawn on 24 occasions. The fixtures also offer fantastic opportunities for betting on total goals and total cards, at very reasonable odds, and with a fiery derby that averages 2 goals a game, it is definitely worth sizing up the market.
