Brazilian Série C

Football players disputing ball during a Brazilian Série B Championship

Such is the fervour for football in Brazil, Serie C forms the third league in the country. It was founded in 1981 and contains 20 teams. Formerly it was open to 64 teams but many of these teams now compete in Serie D. Yet it is more than just the odds and ends of football in Brazil; Serie C is an exciting, involving league.

Brazil Serie C Background

There is a regional aspect to the league, which unites every state in Brazil. Sao Paolo has provided eight winners, Goiás four and Rio de Janeiro and Santa Catarina three each. The great Fluminense, who play at the Maracana, were promoted from Serie C in 1999 at the first attempt.

Incredibly, their coach that season was Carlos Alberto Parreira, which must have surprised many of the opposition teams who played Fluminense in 1999. Odds would have been low on them winning Brazil’s Serie C that season. They were helped by the goals of Julio Cesar and Marco Brito

Brazilian Serie C Structure

Betting can take place over two groups. Group A contains the likes of Manaus, Botafogo and Vila Nova, while Group B includes Ituano, São José and Ypiranga. Each group’s members play one another home and away, giving a table with 18 matchdays.

The top four teams in each group advance to a third group, Group C and D. The top two teams in each group are promoted to Serie B2, with the championship decided in a two-legged final. There are thus plenty of opportunities for betting on these games.

Brazil Serie C Latest Season

In the 2019 season, Nautico topped the Group A table, with Sampaio Correa, Imperatriz and Confianca also advancing to the final stage. From Group B there came Ypiranga, Juventude, Sao Jose and Paysandu, who all incredibly finished on 28 points. The semi-finals were won by Nautico on penalties and Sampaio Correa 3-0 on aggregate. Nautico then triumphed 5-3 on aggregate in Brazil’s Serie C final, which took place in September and October 2019.

Over the course of the season, the scoring charts were led by the likes of Eduardo of Treze and Luiz Eduardo of São José. Eduardo has moved to River in Brazil for a fourth spell there; he scored goals in the 2000s for the likes of Grasshoppers Zurich, Guingamp and Lenz and, at 39, is winding down his career. Luiz Eduardo, meanwhile, is also a much-travelled striker, having played for a rich number of teams in Brazil as well as a three-year spell with Montana in the Bulgarian league.
