The Liga MX is the highest tier of the professional football league system in Mexico. It comprises 18 clubs, and is one of the few football leagues with two phases to the league season. The Liga MX is divided into two phases – Apertura and Clausura, which are both separate tournaments and have individual winners.
Mexico Primera División Champion Qualification
The top eight sides after the ‘regular’ league season go on to the liguilla or playoff stage, to decide the winner of the season. Hence there are two champions every season in Liga MX, and this makes it a very attractive option for betting fans, with odds available on some top betting sites.
Further, relegation from Liga MX is also not straightforward, with one team being relegated each season based on its performance in the league over the past three seasons.
It is considered one of the strongest in North America, and also one of the best-attended, with Liga MX drawing the highest average attendance of any football league in North America, and the third-highest of any sports league. In terms of sporting performance, Club America are the most successful side in Liga MX history, with 13 titles, followed by CV Guadalajara (12 titles), Toluca (12), Cruz Azul (8), and Leon, UANL and UNAM (7).
Thus, the league has not really been dominated by any one club, and this also makes it an attractive betting proposition, with Liga MX betting odds being spread across multiple teams.
Biggest Teams In Liga MX
Club America
Club America are based out of the capital, Mexico City, and as stated earlier, are the most successful side in Liga MX history. They were also one of the 10 founding members of the league, and along with Chivas de Guadalajara, are the only two sides to never have been relegated from the top flight.
America play their home games at the Estadio Azteca, which is the largest stadium in Latin America, and the seventh-largest football stadium in the world. America is a good option to back in the betting stakes, and you will always have decent odds for them, especially as the team won the Apertura as recently as 2018.
Chivas de Guadalajara
Chivas have a unique rule, whereby they do not allow foreigners to play for the club. They have a fierce rivalry with Club America, and their matches are known as El Superclasico. Being one of the most successful sides in Mexican football history, they are thus always a decent option in the betting stakes, despite not winning the Clausura or the Apertura since 2017.
C.F. Monterrey
Monterrey are one of the sides which have been successful in recent years, having won all their five league titles since 1986. They have also done well in international tournaments, notably winning the CONCACAF Champions League three years in a row between 2011 and 2013, and thus are one of the sides to keep an eye out for while betting on Liga MX.
They are likely to have short odds for any tournament they enter, especially as the side won the Apertura in 2019 and are thus the defending champions for Liga MX at the moment.
